Linux Kernel Bits?

Postby Matt Roth » Wed Mar 16, 2005 2:25 pm

I am looking for a command on Linux that will return the OS Kernel bits, e.g. 32 or 64. I don't believe that the "getconf WORD_BIT" is the correct command. I have tried this command on a 64bit Linux system and it returns 32. I have also tried this same command on 64bit Solaris and HP-UX and it returns 32. Solaris and HP-UX have other commands that return the OS bits.

Thanks in advance.

"getconf LONG_BIT" returns the correct kernel bit size.

Yes this seems to work, it is odd that this same command is available on Solaris, AIX, and HP-UX and does not behave the same. On 64bit versions of those OS's both "getconf WORD_BIT" and "getconf LONG_BIT" all return 32.
Thanks,
